Kristol Clear: It's Official --'NYT' Explains Hiring New 'Op-Ed' Wag

By E&P Staff

Published: December 29, 2007 6:20 PM ET

NEW YORK A day after the Huffington Post first reported it, The New York Times has announced that it has indeed hired conservative pundit, and Fox News analyst, Bill Kristol, as a new regular op-ed columnist.

Liberal bloggers had been up in arms over the move, which Kristol said, in an interview with Politico.com, gave him some pleasure. Kristol was perhaps the most influential pundit of all in promoting the U.S. invasion of Iraq and has strongly defended the move ever since.

Times' editorial page editor Andrew Rosenthal defended the move, in an interview with Politico.

Rosenthal told Politico shortly after the official announcement Saturday that he fails to understand “this weird fear of opposing views.”

“The idea that The New York Times is giving voice to a guy who is a serious, respected conservative intellectual — and somehow that’s a bad thing,” Rosenthal added. “How intolerant is that?”

Unlike The Times’ other regulars, Kristol will write only once a week, with his first column set for Jan. 7, and he has just a one-year contract.

Kristol suggested that the paper should face charges, on Fox News in 2006, after its big banking records scoop: "I think it is an open question whether the Times itself should be prosecuted for this totally gratuitous revealing of an ongoing secret classified program that is part of the war on terror.”

A four-way self-contradicting qualifier.

14. That's like being the "smartest lobotomy recipient".

There are no Conservative intellectuals. The movement itself has failed on every front, and been exposed as a kind of macro con job. It's also inherently anti-intellectual, and it's stated goals require the follower to accept multiple contradictory assumptions. Conservatives do not state their real ideals honestly-- at least not publicly.

Anyone who still calls themselves a Conservative today is either a professional liar or an idiot. Mister Kristol is both. The NYT is shouldn't be publishing the opinions of either.

You could find small "C" conservative intellectuals, but Bill Kristol is certainly not a small "C" conservative.

4. I'd be up in arms about it, if I felt the Times had any credibility left
Since they don't, they could give Carrot Top a column and it would hardly make them noticeably more worthless than they already are.

6. NYT subscriber here. I object to paying that sonofabitch money for his opinions on anything.
Seriously considering dropping the paper.

7. I finally dropped mine this year
after 20 years. I shoulda dropped it years ago. I was an addict. It was tough, I like to read it over lunch. But my conscience just couldn't abide it any longer.

Judith Miller. Michael Gordon. Sitting on domestic wiretapping til after the election. And so so so much more.

Simon Romero's coverage from Venezuela was the last straw for me.

8. We need Kristol
So we can find out what he predicts, and know that the exact opposite is likely to happen.

10. Yet another dishonest right wing hack
and a warmonger to boot.

Guess the Post was getting too far into the lead in their race toward disreputability.

12. LMAO. Kristol. What a great mind.
Iraq has nukes.
The war will pay for itself.
We will be greeted as liberators.
The Iraqis will build a statue of liberator Bush.
Democracy will spread across the Middle East.

He is a shining example of a conservative intellectual, isn't he?

15. I wish I could post Kristol and Daniels' pre-Iraq war discussion on CSPAN.
Kristol was WRONG on every fucking point.

Daniels was right.

Who the hell ordained Kristol as a "respected" figure, of any freakin' legion, anyway? He's ALWAYS wrong. HE IS ALWAYS WRONG!!!

13. Rosenthal sounds like a semi-conscious freeper.
That's a line I've heard right-wing half-wits utter on many occasions. 'You're supposed to be tolerant, why aren't you tolerant of my bigotry?'.

The paper of Judy Miller isn't in a rush to regain it's credibility, apparently.

16. Hasn't Howell Raines done enough time in the penalty box?
How about Tina Brown? How about anyone from The Guardian as editor in chief?

Kristol admits he never taught after his PhD because "it was too much work." What is the point of having the Dr. before his name if he doesn't teach? He thankfully doesn't use it, unlike that highly respected Sovietologist Dr. Rice.

The entire Kristol Klan could be swallowed up at an AEI event and no one would notice until his copy didn't get turned in on time or he didn't make it to makeup on time for his shiteating grin to be polished for the TVs.

Baldwin and Gutierrez's. I wasted a few minutes writing the NYtimes reminding them of that fact.

18. So what if he's been wrong about everything he ever pontificated about?
He's a Serious Person, and to the Villagers, that's what matters. They find the very idea of being held responsible for one's own work very peculiar.

He's a wretched piece of shit. But so is the Times.

20. AHHH! BUT!!! THEY advocate personal responsibility AT THE MOST POWERLESS.
Ick!

What does smirky billy boy assume responsibility for other than self-service?

I'll bet that dough-boy has "Support Our Troops" on the back of his new MO-BILE, and has little to no record of contributing to veterans' well-being.

How much time does smirky billy boy donate to sustaining the lives of the American people?
