DU Goes to the Movies
Edited on Sat Dec-29-07 08:35 PM by NanceGreggs
Well, it’s been a little wacky here on DU of late. But IMHO, there isn’t a situation that can’t be summed up with a movie quote (with some alterations).

Now Showing – Something for Everyone!

… for the ‘you are all driving me nuts’ crowd:

“This isn’t a hospital website, this is an insane asylum!” (“Hotlips” Houlihan - M*A*S*H*)

… for the doom-‘n-gloomers:

“It’s an express elevator to hell – goin’ down.” (Cpl. Dwayne Hicks – “Aliens”)

… for the IBTL ticket-holders:

“I’m not bad, they just draw post me this way!” (Jessica – “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?”)

… for those with an axe to grind:

“I’m going to pick a fight flamewar.” (William Wallace – “Braveheart”)

… for the candidate bashers/counter-bashers:

“Take your hands off me, you damned dirty apes: (a) Hillary supporters, (b) Obama supporters, (c) Edwards supporters, (d) …
(George Taylor – “Planet of the Apes”)

… for the stoic, it-happens-every-primary posters:

“Forget it, Jake – it’s Chinatown GDP."
(Lawrence Walsh – “Chinatown”)

… for those rendered speechless by an OP they disagree with:

“Fuck, fuck, fuckity fuck” (Charles – “Four Weddings & A Funeral”)

… for the I’ve-lost-all-hopers:

“It’s like ‘how much more black could this be?’ And the answer is ‘none, none more black’.” (Nigel – Spinal Tap)

… for those who insist they are leaving DU:

“Just when I think I’m out, they pull me back in.”
(Michael Corleone – “Godfather III”)

… for those who understand the irony of it all:

“Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here! This is the War Room!” (Merkin Muffley – “Dr. Strangelove”)

… for those on-the-lookout for pesky intruders:

“You moved the tombstones – but you didn’t move the bodies trolls, did ya?” (Steve Freeling – “Poltergeist”)

… for those who just can’t resist arguing to the death:

“Your eyes posts are full of hate, (reply) number 41. That’s good. Hate keeps a man alive, it gives him strength.”
(Quintas Arrius – “Ben Hur”)

… for those who can’t resist arguing when there is no argument:

“You know, you can’t fool us by agreeing with us.”
(Roy Neary – “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”)

… for those who venture into the internet cosmos and report back:

“Our scout ships have reached Dantooine Freeperville. They found the remains of a rebel base – but they estimate that it has been deserted for some time.”
(Officer Cass – “Star Wars”)

… for the anti-Pelosi/Reid gang:

“You was my brother representative. You shoulda looked out for me a little bit.”
(Terry Malloy – “On the Waterfront”)

… for those who read the Latest Page thread titles, and venture in anyway:

“Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.”
(Margo Channing – “All About Eve”)

… for those who only post about Iraq …

“I’m just here for the gasoline.” (Max BushCo – “The Road Warrior”)

… or the economy:

“Greed is good.” (Gordon Gekko – “Wall Street”)

… or the environment:

“I was there, I can prove it! When I was a kid, you could buy meat anywhere, and eggs, and they had real butter – not this crap.” (Sol – “Soylent Green”)

… for those who get their threads locked:

“Your rules are really beginning to annoy me.” (Snake Plissken – “Escape from L.A.”)

… for peace-and-quiet lovers everywhere:

“We’ll always have Paris the Lounge.”
(Rick Blaine – “Casablanca”)

… for those searching for a compromise they can live with:

"Love IGNORE means never having to say you’re sorry.” (Oliver Barrett Jr. - “Love Story”)

Please feel free to add your own ...

40. I can't believe no one's posted the obvious
The generic, all-purpose, one-size-fits-all, freakin'-MADE-for-DU rant.

So, I get to do it. :bounce:

I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's work, banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TV's while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and 63 violent crimes, as if that's the way it's supposed to be. We know things are bad — worse than bad. They're crazy! It's like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don't go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, 'Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone.' Well, I'm not gonna leave you alone! I want you to get mad! I don't want you to protest! I don't want you to riot — I don't want you to write to your Congressman because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians Republicans and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you've got to get mad. You've got to say, 'I'm a HUMAN BEING, Goddamnit! My life has VALUE!' So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell, 'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!' I want you to get up right now, sit up, go to your windows, open them and stick your head out and yell, 'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!' Things have got to change! But first, you've gotta get mad! You've got to say, 'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!' Then we'll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chairs, open the window, stick your head out, and yell, and say it: 'I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!'"

50. k & r -- GD needs an antidote to the GD-P - ification that's happening here lately.
Sorry, I am unable to come up with a suitable movie quote for the sentiment expressed above. Something from Invasion of the Body Snatchers, maybe?

Or Night of the Living Dead? "Yeah, they're dead. They're all messed up."

Dunno...

52. Just how many voters do you think my soul is worth?
Joe Lieberman: You have a debt to pay. You've been captain of the Democratic Party for thirteen years. *That* was our agreement.

Bill Clinton: Technically, I was only captain for two years, then I was viciously mutinied upon.

Joe Lieberman: Then you were a poor captain, but a *captain* nonetheless! Have you not introduced yourself all these years as *President* Bill Clinton? (laughs)

Bill Clinton: You have my payment. One vote to serve on your DLC coalition, she's already over there.

Joe Lieberman: One vote is not equal to another.

Bill Clinton: Aha! So we've established my proposal is sound in principle, now we're just haggling over price.

Joe Lieberman: Price? Pttt!

Bill Clinton: Just how many voters do you think my soul is worth?

Joe Lieberman: One hundred voters, three days-uh.

Bill Clinton: You're a diamond, mate. Send me back my wife, I'll get started right off. (makes to leave)

Joe Lieberman: I keep Hillary. A good-faith payment. That leaves you only ninety-nine voters to go. Ha ha! Ha ha! Ha ha!

Bill Clinton: Have you not met my wife, Hillary Clinton? She's noble, heroic, *terrific* alto, Worth at least four... maybe three and a half. And did I happen to mention... I'm in love. With a girl. Due to be married. Betrothed. Dividing me from her and her from me... would only be half as cruel as actually allowing us to remain joined in holy matrimony. Aye?

Joe Lieberman: I keep Hillary, Ninety-nine votes-uh. But aye wonder, Bill. Can ya live with this? Can ya condemn an innocent woman - a spouse - to a lifetime of servitude, in your name while ye roam free?

Bill Clinton: (thoughtful pause, then cheerfully) Yep! I'm good with it. Shall we seal it in blood? I mean... mm-mm - ink?

(Lieberman grabs Bill's hand, resulting in a squishy sound]

Bill Clinton: Uh!

Joe Lieberman: Three days. (whispers) Three days.

(Bill Clinton looks at his hand, it's covered with slime, but the black spot disappears under the effect of the slime)

Bill Clinton: Oh, Mr. Penn.

Mark Penn: Aye.

Bill Clinton: Uh, I feel sullied and unusual.

Mark Penn: And how do you intend to harvest these ninety-nine voters in three days?

Bill Clinton: Fortunately, he was mum as the condition in which these voters need be.

Mark Penn: Ah... Iowa!

Bill Clinton: (grins) Iowa.

As a wake up call to the 25%ers who are true believers in the Supreme Chancellor (ooops I meant President Bush) and the other 30+ percent of our nation who are just scared....

"... the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, disease. There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the now high chancellor (president), Adam Sutler (George W. Bush). He promised you order, he promised you peace, and all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent. Last night I sought to end that silence. Last night I destroyed the Old Bailey, to remind this country of what it has forgotten. More than four hundred years ago a great citizen wished to embed the fifth of November forever in our memory. His hope was to remind the world that fairness, justice, and freedom are more than words, they are perspectives. So if you've seen nothing, if the crimes of this government remain unknown to you then I would suggest you allow the fifth of November to pass unmarked. But if you see what I see, if you feel as I feel, and if you would seek as I seek, then I ask you to stand beside me one year from tonight, outside the gates of Parliament, and together we shall give them a fifth (FOURTH) of November that shall never, ever be forgot."

V, from V For Vendetta

I guess I'm still having a more depressing view of the world...

Though perhaps this quote from V still keeps me going:

"People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people." V - V for Vendetta

Some more V quotes:

(after a hail of gunfire doesn't stop V)
Creedy: Die! Die! Why won't you die?... Why won't you die?
V: Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.

.....

V: No, what you have are bullets, and the hope that when your guns are empty I'm no longer be standing, because if I am you'll all be dead before you've reloaded.
Creedy: That's impossible. Kill him.
(the fingermen open fire on V, but he still stands after their clips are empty)
V: My turn.

And from Blade Runner, when what appears to be an uncaring android Roy Baty, played by Rutger Hauer, catches Deckard (played by Harrison Ford) instead of letting him fall to his death, he shows the mercy that is SO missing from our countries' leaderships these days, and is something that would be welcome at some point. When Roy dies himself instead at that moment, he says this right before he dies:

Roy: I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain. Time to die.

Wish Bush would find some humanity and say something like that only maybe something like "Time to resign!" instead!
