Stephen King calls out the media in a Time interview
http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/12/28/yir.2007/index.html

"In an interview last month with Time magazine, the master of the macabre asked who the magazine's person of the year would be. Then he offered his own candidates: Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan.

The news media, he observed, is being overwhelmed by entertainment gossip. " 'You guys are just covering -- what do they call it -- the scream of the peacock, and you're missing the whole fox hunt.' Like waterboarding where all the money went that we poured into Iraq. It just seems to disappear.

'And yet you get this coverage of who's gonna get custody of Britney's kids? ... You've got these things going on ... that could affect all of us, and instead, you see a lot of this back-fence gossip.' "

Good for Mr. King!!!

1. I predicted the Person of the Year would be Hannah Montana.
I mean, whose name has been mentioned in the news more this year?

16. Oh, wait...
I must know the dad. There's only one famous Montana, isn't there?

Well, please: no more.

18. Well who else?
Don't. Just don't. Did you know when I moved back to the U.S. in 2004 I didn't even know who Britney Spears was? And now? I was better off that way.

19. I didn't want to leave innocent readers with the impression that Joe Montana...
is involved...lol. ;-) (Joe's from my neck of the woods, so I'm protective)

Someone will surely correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Hannah Montana thing is just a character, played by the daughter of the "boot-skoot boogy" country singer - or whatever that song was ages ago - Billy Ray Cyrus.

20. I don't know much about Britney
but I :loveya: Joe Montana.

He replaced my all time favorite QB, Johnny Unitus. And remains my favorite. No one could lick his fingers before a pass like Joe.

2. The answer is WALTER JACOBSEN ..

Put WALTER JACOBSEN in charge of CNN. If you've ever seen the way this guy hunted the Croooked Democratic Chicago Machine, you'd know what kind of number he'd do on war spending. Him and Greg Palast.

9. Not Any More...
Walter was "retired" to guest shots a couple years ago. I've known Walter for over 30 years and he has always favored liberal and progressive ideas.

3. With MSM smelling a shift in the air....
maybe they'll start doing their jobs more reliably. This election cycle can go many ways...it can become a glut of noise, confusing the masses further, or REAL issues can come to the fore, with legitimate investigative journalism exposing the root causes of these issues we face today. There have been legitimate journalists all along, but their voices have been squelched, as we all know here at DU. Perhaps - even if it's initially for $$ reasons rather than altruistic ones - the MSM can return to being the Fourth Estate.

Reversing the corporatocracy is our only hope, and I realize it's a HERCULEAN struggle at this stage, but it's one that must be undertaken.

I realize many here don't believe it can happen, but without the hope that it can, I'm not sure how to continue. For those without this hope, I'll have hope that things can change on your behalf until you can reclaim it yourself.

6. The media is owned and operated by and for the big corporations.
The so-called main-stream media is not "free and independent." It is wholly owned by huge corporations. Those corporations like the way that things are going just fine. They like Republicans in the White House and Congress. The media will not change until enough Americans insist on real news and invest in independent journalism.

7. I'm hoping the national cloud of apathy that has hung over this...
country for so long is starting to lift and that Americans WILL insist upon real news, as you said.

Unfortunately, things had to get really, really bad...indeed, things are probably going to get worse before it gets better, but the candidates have an opportunity to really wake people up. Granted, an aware citizenry isn't popular with those in power (corporations and politicians), but once the sleeping giant starts to awaken...well, I hope there's no turning back at that point.
