Tapes of interrogations were made to protect CIA
Officials say they were designed to allay fears, but politics then led to their cessation

By SCOTT SHANE and MARK MAZZETTI
New York Times

WASHINGTON — If Abu Zubaydah, a senior operative of al-Qaida, died in American hands, CIA officers pursuing the terrorist group knew that much of the world would believe they had killed him.

So in the spring of 2002, even as the intelligence officers flew in a surgeon from Johns Hopkins Hospital to treat Abu Zubaydah, who had been shot three times during his capture in Pakistan, they set up video cameras to record his every moment: asleep in his cell, having his bandages changed, being questioned by interrogators...

1. This piece of propaganda should be taught in schools.
Really.

2. So, we had to destroy the tapes so we couldn't be seen as humane?
:grr:

9. Obviously
If word leaked out to the other prisoners about the cheesecake and wine spritzers, then all the prisoners would want them. To save the defense budget, those tapes had to be destroyed.

Trust me, after the second lobotomy and three months' posting at Free Republic, this would all make perfect sense. However, if you stubbornly insist on basing your opinions on reality, then there's not much the Bush administration can teach you.

3. Wouldn't you just love to find out that your surgeon
participated in torture without blowing the whistle on the whole damn mess?

4. There is no proof that Abu Zubaydah even exists.
(I'm sure he does but how do we know that anything Bushco says about him is true?)

5. Reading the entire article in the NYT today, they are blaming it all on Jose Rodriguez, despite
four WHouse lawyers who had full knowledge of this. I read this as an attempt by some to hurt Jose Rodrigues credibility and stick him with this whole thing. He was burned in Iran Contra by the CIA as well. Thats why he took out an insurance policy to pay legal costs. Bennett isn't a cheap two bit lawyer.

To me this article was written to hang Jose Rodriguez with the blame entirely. OIther actors should be scrutinized more closely.

6. Re the tapes, I'm much more inclined to believe someone was
mistakenly "offed" during the torture sessions and that's why the tapes were destroyed. If we had tapes showing how well we treated prisoners, they'd still be in existence.
