Poll question: Should Strike-Breaking Writers Who Get an Emmy Have an Asterisk Next to Their Name?
Edited on Sun Dec-30-07 05:57 PM by CorpGovActivist
Is it wrong to take advantage of more talented writers who adhere to their principles?

Thanks for registering your opinion.

1. You have to be present to win????
I must have missed the post that prompted this poll.

12. Emmys are given for something already written and submitted for
consideration.

18. Hopefully the Striking Writers...
... have been exposed to new experiences, giving them fresh new material, by dint of striking - and that they have enough time after the strike to get their material into competition against the picket-crossers.

2. The Emmys are decided by vote, not attendance.
We really ought to have a poll for stupidest, most ignorance-based poll. I nominate this one.

8. Your Ignorance...
... of how Emmy nominations are made is showing.

The striking writers - who might otherwise be actively working and producing eligible material - are at a disadvantage.

Swimmers who sit out a competition, or runners, or pole vaulters, are analogies you might think of in this case.

4. That's a tricky one - because it hinges on an unknown.
I mean it's easy enough to say that if writer x had been in the running writer y would have lost - but there's no way to know. And of course talent isn't connected directly to union loyalty.

That said, yeah, probably, because you can't know. Hopefully the strike won't last long enough that it becomes an issue.

The Golden Globes might be canceled. The People's Choice awards have been canceled. The Oscars might be canceled. The Emmy's are in September and I hope the strike with be settled by then.

19. Advertisers, Baby
And that's what this all boils down to. If the writers stay strong, eventually the advertisers will tell the networks to stop being pricks and settle. Writers = watchable programs. Watchable programs = viewers. Viewers = advertisers.

20. Agreed...
... and I think the WGA should formally seek solidarity from other unions. For example, UMWA miners used to descend on auto dealerships, put the salestaff through their paces, then pull out at the last minute, telling them to call the Detroit Automakers to say that they'd lost another sale to solidarity.

If there were a rolling boycott of premium cable, for instance (one month per union), I bet the loss of revenue to entertainment conglomerates would help move this along to a much quicker conclusion.

SAG is coming up for a new contract and the writer's strike is giving them ideas. So, there's a start.
