WE weren't kidding when we reported on Saturday about Sen. Arlen Specter's taste for Polish jokes. The Pennsylvania Republican has been apologizing ever since. Tim Kuzma, of the Polish Falcons of America, said he found the ethnic jokes "appalling" and got a call from Specter this week: "I do respect that he called, that he did apologize; it was a good step, and the right thing to do." Specter also reached out to Rick Pierchalski of the Polish Cultural Council, and Michael Blichasz and Frank Spula of the Polish American Congress, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Specter, who runs for re-election in 2010, wrote to Blichasz, "In retrospect, I can see that they were inappropriate and I regret having made them. You may be sure I will never make the same mistake again."

THE first grandchild of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is a boy, her father, Chuck Heath, revealed to Grandparents.com. Heath said his pregnant granddaughter, Bristol Palin, has a due date of Dec. 20. Asked what Bristol and the child's still unmarried father, Levi Johnston, will name the baby, Heath answered, "Oscar . . . No, I'm just kidding. They don't have a name for it yet." Heath said Palin has more than 200 media requests, plus 87 boxes of unopened mail from all over the world.
