President-elect Barack Obama’s choice of conservative Christian minister Rick Warren to give the inauguration invocation conforms perfectly with the president-elect’s pledge of inclusiveness. The selection has generated a firestorm among liberals, gay rights activists and even a few from the Christian right, but apparently they just don’t get it when it comes to assessing (or accepting) Obama’s oft-stated modus operandi.
As if to emphasize the balance he is bringing to his administration, Obama’s choice for the inauguration benediction is the Rev. Joseph Lowery, a liberal Methodist who is the dean of the civil rights movement.
Warren, on the other hand, is a conservative Southern Baptist who runs the Saddleback Church in California and is considered to be the most influential pastor in the nation. He opposes gay marriage and was a high-profile supporter of California’s Proposition 8, which banned gay marriage. Gay rights groups are demanding Obama rescind the invitation to Warren.
He should do nothing of the kind.
