HELP!! I have a question...
Sorry to clutter up the Board, but I've spent about two hours trying to figure out what came in a gift fruit basket from 'a grateful patient'...

It's very large, dark yellow, resembles an apple but it's about 5-6 inches across and has a relatively smooth skin. It was presented in a basket with a neat little white lace fishnet covering. Classy - I'm a sucker for stuff like that.

"I thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter"

Oh, and since this is a political discussion board: Bush is, without question, drinking heavily.

Seriously, my state has a site where you can have a chat session with a live librarian to answer goofy questions like that.

17. In Columbus Ohio you just call up the library and ask them anything.
They will even research the item and call back. We once asked them how to paint a parking lot to get the most cars parked and they faxed us back 3 options.

my fruit is too smooth, symmetrical, and the stem bears no resemblance to the quince.

That's an awful lot of fruit. Do you just pick what you want and leave the rest or are they normally harvested after the snows fall?

25. pollinators
Most fruit varieties are not self-fertile. That means they need to have pollen from another variety in order to set fruit. In this case, a few Asian pears were planted in a block of D'Anjou pears to pollinate them. Then, it is usually not worthwhile to send a crew out just to pick the (relatively) few pieces of fruit from the pollinating variety. However, the pears in that photo are now sitting in my frig, and all of the neighbors got some as well.

29. oh ... interesting
Didn't know that. The irony is that, around here at least (Ontario), the Asian pears are very costly and the Anjou quite reasonable. I'm glad that those particular pears aren't going to waste.

30. well, they never go to waste
Edited on Sun Dec-21-08 06:52 PM by Two Americas
The animals eat them, and they get composted back in to the soil. The value in food is all in the labor - harvesting, shipping, packing, etc. and the fixed expenses of the farmer. Millions of tons of wild fruit go unharvested every year, but we don't think of that as "waste." The food is free, really. It is the effort of the farmers we are paying for when we buy food.

and I always recommend those over the others. I don't think I've seen Asian pears at our grocery store.

32. just between you and me
I had heard glowing reports about Asian pears before I got to Washington, but I now think they are highly over-rated. Bosc pears are wonderful, I agree. A good pear has a complex flavor, and a buttery texture. The Asian pears are pretty and but are bland, and for some reason food with those "features" always has an appeal for American consumers.

I think you are from Washington state, aren't you sandnsea? Here are some more photos in the fruit district from the last couple of days.

I hesitate to say I'm "from" anywhere because I've lived lengths of time in several places, including Spokane and Long Beach, but just a few months each. My husband is from Walla Walla though. Those are gorgeous pics, are they in eastern WA, or Wenatchee area, or somewhere else entirely?
