http://feeds.bignewsnetwork.com/?sid=236178The funds U.S. President George W. Bush has spent in wars on three fronts is staggering, and the numbers are accelerating.
The cost of the war on terror, the Afghanistan, and Iraq invasions and occupations, in monetary terms, is running at hundreds of billions of dollars, and by the end of the president's term in office will have totalled around $1 trillion.
This aside from the misery and destruction wrought on uninvited host countries, civilian deaths tolls running into the hundreds of thousands (one estimate to June 2006 being 655,000), the more than 3,500 U.S. troops killed, and more than 25,000 wounded in action, 90% of which have been in Iraq, and much of the balance in Afghanistan. This aside from the cost in human terms by coalitions troops, and humanitarian organizations such as the UN, and the Red Cross, private contractors, and the 155 journalists killed.
Now a report released this week by the Congressional Research Service attempts to total the financial costs so far, together with the ongoing expenditures. The report slams the military for a lack of transparency, tracking, accountability, and reporting.
