Chris Matthews has it bad for Fred Thompson
Edited on Fri Mar-30-07 02:45 PM by Stevendsmith
MATTHEWS: Let’s talk about gritty New Hampshire.

MATTHEWS: They are looking for a tough guy who’s got a little five o’clock shadow, like you. They’re looking for a guy like you, Pat (Buchanan).

Here is Fred Thompson going in there. John McCain certainly deserves to be president, based on his contribution to this country over the years, but he ran once. How many chances do you get? And in comes Fred Thompson, looking like the Daddy party, if there ever was a guy that looked like the Daddy party, the Republican. Can he win this thing?

BUCHANAN: He looks like a big truck driver.

MATTHEWS: With a semi behind him.

12. Tweety just practicing his man love for Truck Driver Fred. I'm thinking
we need to send Eric Alterman's article from last week to Tweets again to remind him it is so obvious when he has crushes on these guys.

Right after that article came out Tweety actually hit on the lady who does the stock market report during a live broadcast. It was slimy and uncouth and lame and so over the top it had to be in response to Alterman's article.

It bears repeating to for all who might have missed it the first time around.

The Liberal Media by Eric Alterman

The Many Man-Crushes of Chris Matthews

Chris Matthews is not known as a particularly right-wing television talk-show host nor, by the standards of the profession, a particularly foolish one. NBC considers him to be such an asset, it gave him his own Sunday program, in addition to the nightly cable shout fest Hardball.

Within MSNBC, Matthews represents the "center" between the right-wing Tucker Carlson and the taken-for-a-liberal Keith Olbermann. It's worth taking a closer look, therefore, at just what passes for classy, centrist and sane in today's Fox-driven cable cosmos.

Like anyone who spends much time on live TV, Chris Matthews tends to say a lot of silly things. (I did too during the two years I was so employed.) But patterns and passions tell a tale, and those exhibited by Matthews are revealing. Like Elvis, Matthews can't help falling in love. And also like the King--who developed a thing for both Richard Nixon and J. Edgar Hoover late in life--the object of Matthews's affection is invariably a tough-talking, self-styled Republican macho-man. And when he gets going on one of these guys, his style of punditry owes more to, say, Tiger Beat or Teen People than the Trilateral Commission.

Going back to 9/11, Matthews found himself blown away not by Bush's political or military response but by his ability to throw a baseball. He compared the man to--I kid you not--Ernest Hemingway. "There are some things you can't fake," he explained breathlessly. "Either you can throw a strike from sixty feet or you can't. Either you can rise to the occasion on the mound at Yankee Stadium with 56,000 people watching or you can't. On Tuesday night, George W. Bush hit the strike zone in the House that Ruth Built.... This is about knowing what to do at the moment you have to do it--and then doing it. It's about that 'grace under pressure' that Hemingway gave as his very definition of courage."

And remember that now-infamous Mission Accomplished moment? True, Matthews did not join his guest G. Gordon Liddy in admiring--still not kidding--the President's pretend penis, but he was no less focused on Bush's fashion statements. "He looks great in a military uniform. He looks great in that cowboy costume he wears when he goes West," he cooed. "We're proud of our President. Americans love having a guy as President, a guy who has a little swagger, who's physical, who's not a complicated guy like Clinton.... Women like a guy who's President. Check it out."

I think Tweety just meant that it was "his turn."

8. Yeah, but last month it was for Benito Giuliani.
He's as fickle as my beloved Stephanie Miller, but Steph at least has a sense of humor about it.

I can just see him drooling and spitting all over Buchanan.

5. Oh, dear.
Looks like Eric Alterman is going to have to update his Nation article, "The Many Man-Crushes of Chris Matthews". He only fleetingly mentions Mr. Thompson.

to openly express their desire for a father figure "leader".

Try being a man YOURSELF, Chris. Most of the adults I know what *representatives*, not *leaders*, and certainly not DADDIES.

15. The sad pathetic part is that
far too many people share Tweetie's ignorance and shallowness in voting for a president solely on looks.
So far, NO ONE has heard ONE of Thompson's position on any issue, so why should he be considered?
There are plenty good reasons why Al Gore should be considered by Dems, but in Thompson's case, the Reptilians are grasping at straws.

16. I doubt Fred has worn a baseball cap since his last Dixie Youth game.
I am sure that his version of "work boots" are handmade Johnson and Murphy's from Nashville!

If I ever saw "country club" lawyer written on anyone it is Fred Thompson, p.s., I know the type, I live one county south of him. Which also was the hometown of Michael Jeter and David Crockett! (Lawrenceburg, TN, the Mule Days Festival in Columbia is 12-15 April this year, and it is a very special one: the 200th anniversary of Maury County! -- wonder if Fred will be there?)
