I mean, all that pigskin handling and man-on-man action has to account for something, right?

Oh. They didn't have the NFL, WWE and the Rugby League back in the Bronze Age.

Sorry.

1. You could also include WWE wrestling in that list as well.

Nothing really "homosexual" about those sports

I take it that you've never been a Tight End?

14. Well I do have experience to know
Not a Tight End (named from its position relative to the line). Just a center, flanker and collegiate wrestler. So ya know, I don't really get it.

18. Sorta, because it does a disservice to multiple parties...
Edited on Sun Oct-11-09 07:21 PM by Oregone
Not just the athletes, mind you, but homosexuals, who are about more than just being "sexual" with man-on-man contact. Remember, you are sorta saying these manly, christian sports are "gay" (have attributes associated with homosexual stereotypes). Well, I hate to say it, but that reinforces the stereo-types in the first place.

I'm not really a dead-serious type guy. I just sorta think the whole thing was based on some common mis-perceptions of the sports AND gay men.

With that....carry on.

20. That wasn't my point
Rather than the ridiculous nature of gay stereotyping based on ancient standards.

Xipe Totec's post referring to the West Wing clip was part and parcel of my point.

If I had to sacrifice and few athletes on the altar of snarkishness to make it, so be it.

23. have you ever seen rugby?
Man..... sure, I'd heard of it and stuff, but when I saw it on British TV I was amazed.... it is men in short shorts playing grab-ass and little else. I'm a straight guy who's and comfortable with it - I can hug guys and tell them I love them, etc. but I would not be comfortable playing rugby.

24. I played it through college
Its a bit more than men in shorts "playing grab-ass". It is perpetual carnage. Pure unleashed aggression.

When you are done, everyone gets tanked and sings songs together. Sorta odd in that way, but as for the sport itself, it is absolutely brutal

seriously though, it creeps me out. I don't get the appeal at all. Though I do love getting tanked and singing songs.

8. The cable version of NFL football must be alot more exciting

Except for the ocassional wardroom malfunction, the regular television version doesn't show any of things you are talking about.

25. same reason they object to evilution but not heliocentricism
they have no coherent system of looking at or thinking about the world: they're "biblical literalists" but never seem to have read more than Genesis 1, a few lines of Leviticus, and a disco version of Revelations

Protestant fundamentalism mostly rose out of isolated churches and Puritan-style father-as-family-preacher households; totally amateurish and lacking in theologians--just whoever has good enough hair and can make the boogeyman go away

that's how they can be literalists while having no reading comprehension skills whatsoever (like the cons insisting that there's no right to privacy in the Bill of Rights)

they (and the Palinoids) also have the attention span of gnats, which is how they can be worked up into a frenzy so fast (abortion, the menace of political correctness, Sri Lankan UN ambassadors wanting to ban land mines, Sikh turbans, hijab scarves and veils, MEChA, Stalinists plotting to sweep out from America's universities and hand us over to the Russkie paratroopers, Jews poisoning the wells and the holy Tsar, the gays): they always forget the last issue until the loudspeakers tell them who/what to hate. Judging from Stephen Jay Gould, Larry Witham, and Ronald Numbers's studies, creationism really comes and goes--almost like any other hot-button fad.

That's also how American conservatives went from loathing Jews as red diaper babies or smelly Orientals in the 50s to lauding them as steroid-sodden neck-slashing terrorist-raping Muslim- or Commie-fighters by the 70s--and as a substitute/prosthesis for a failing America, to be supported even by the neocons holding themselves to be "above religion."

fundie Christians are also very, VERY stupid (generally speaking, of course: Pat Robertson et al are amoral and lacking all empathy, but not "stupid")
