Wel, Minnesota is a verry "norwigian" state in the US... Many norwigians who was emigrating to the US, was indeed settling in Minnesota, becouse of the farmland - in many cases more or less free farmland.. But also becouse it had, and still have a big contigent of norwigians... And some swedish and danish.. Even tho even in US, we got better with the danish, than with the swedish farmers:P So it is not that suprising that Minnesota, could rougly be "translated" to Norway, if you get GDP vise..

My great-grandfather came over from Vik i Sogn and eventually owned a large farm in Northern Iowa (The same Norse culture as Minnesota). I am old enough to remember when the older folk all spoke Norwegian and my uncle could imitate different Norwegian dialects and my grandfather laughed. O my, paa glemte veie as the writer Rolvaag would say. Well, that's how it was then. My wife's grandfather also got himself a good-sized farm. We still own it and rent it out.

On another topic they also brought over a lot of the Jante loven. Yes, I liked En flykning krysser sitt spor by Aksel Sandemose.I have a copy in Norwegian but read it in English. Thou must not laugh at us!! Poor Nykobing!

Wel, if you are grown up with the stuff, you tend to like it some how, and it is a dish that is little difficult to learn to eat when you are older... I know, I usaly eat it just one time a year... And I am grown up with the stuff....

And yes, it exist a lot of food, who is far better than Lutefisk, if we have to make a point of it:)

I know you have told that before I guess, about your family ancestry.. It is interesting bemuse Sogn today is one of the areas where tourist is traveling, to se the nice nature and to admire the cute homes:P.. But if you ho 100 year back in time, it was some difference, to say at least to that...

And yes, many ended up in Iowa, or Minnesota and so on, and was respectable farmers.. They usually had been farmers, or been worker on others farmers back home - and tilled all day to the pennies worth.. In US they could farm large land, and the prosperity also was been showed in the end, many farmers, in the early days had it hard, with Small houses, and hard work.. But the farm land was, for the mostly great and the land was also free, and they OWNED it them self, no man stood over him and get the best from his work...

A first cousin of my grand father emigrated to the US, I think it was in the 1910s, and when my dad was over there in the 1950s, he was working on a ship, and had 2 weeks leave as the ship was in dock to do some repairs, he wisted his family over there.. And he was amazed about the size of the farm.. it took a good long hour from the gate, to the house, and everything he was looking about, was the family members property.. So he striked it good over there in the US... Even my old father almost decided to emigrate to US, so it was a 50/50 chance I could have grown up in the US:p

Well, that parts of our culture is maybe not the best that we get with ut over there.. But even tho Janteloven is still alive, and kicking, it is far less interesting today, than it was 50 or 100 year ago.. Most people have going away from the whole idea and are more open minded to the rest of the world this days... But now and then, the evil head of "jante-loven" is raising the ugly head, and it happed mostly on smaller places, where everyone know each other... But it is still there, in the back... So it is not suprising that even today, En flyktning krysser sine spor is regular in school to be read, and to be understands.. Even tho it is a boooooooooring book, who I read just because it was a book needed to be readed.. Not because I was in love with Aksel Sandemose.... You out to try it in Norwegian some day, if you still can read the language then;)

Its sound your family still missed Norway in some parts, even tho they had been in US for many years, had settled down, and been a part of US for Long time. I can understand if they missed that area of Norway, as it IS one of the most beautifully areas of Norway - and we have a lot of nice places to visit.. A lot of nature who was shaped by the Ice Ages more than 10.000 year ago.. And who today have given Norway some striking areas where you must be blind to not be in awe... We maybe are not the best place to lick sun, but what we maybe doesn't have in that area, we is taking back, many times in other areas....
