Ohio Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer dies
Ohio Chief Justice Thomas Moyer died unexpectedly today at age 70.
Moyer had been experiencing health problems, but they were not thought to be life threatening, according to a statement from the court.
Moyer, chief justice since 1987, was admitted to Riverside Hospital late Thursday morning and was pronounced dead at 4 p.m. today.
A native of Sandusky, Moyer was a well-known public official in Franklin County before joining the court, having served on the Columbus school board, as a top aide to Republican Gov. James A. Rhodes, and on the Franklin Court Court of Appeals.
He was Ohio's seventh elected chief justice, a title created in a 1913 law.
