5. It's hard for me to say what I find most disturbing about stories like this.

First of all, I have to wonder about the mental state of the people who practice this type of self-mutilation in the belief that it proclaims their faith or in order to perform some sort of penance to God.

I then wonder about the motives of the people who will dress up in period clothing in order to help other individuals play out a reenactment of a barbaric practice.

Lastly, I have to wonder about the people who come to watch this type spectacle and take pictures of the pain and suffering of others and feel like they have witnessed an inspirational event.

The fact that this is all done as an affirmation of religious faith just amazes me.
