Some Utah County parents are calling on the Alpine School District to stop spreading "false educational ideas." First and foremost, the parents say, the district needs to clamp down on its use of the D-word: "democracy."

This week, a spokeswoman for Utah's Republic, a group that advocates for a strict interpretation of the U.S. Constitution, asked the Alpine Board of Education to scrap its democracy-centered mission statement. The issue has sparked a dust-up over the past month, garnering petition signatures from hundreds of Alpine parents and a rebuke of the school board by the Provo Daily Herald's editorial board.

Alpine's mission statement is "Educating all students to ensure the future of our democracy."

But this nation is a republic, not a democracy, said Oak Norton, a Highland father of five and the founder of Utah's Republic. The Constitution guarantees every state a "republican form of government." "Karl Marx said, 'Democracy is the road to socialism,' " Norton said. A true democracy, he said, relies solely on majority rule and inevitably devolves into anarchy, which then sprouts socialist dictators.

5. For those not living in Utah

Alpine is located in (and I think this was in a recent study), the most Republican County in the United States. It is considered somewhat of an elitst community, and not suprising the school district is considered the same. There are so many very things wrong with this statement and the ideas they are floating around, I don't even know where to begin. And Romney is their hero, can you even imagine?

6. Rural Utah is like an alternate universe, that's true

but SLC elected one of the most progressive mayors out there, Rocky Anderson.

Every state, no matter how backwards, has at least one liberal island, usually its biggest city, sometimes its biggest college town.

7. SLC is in a differenct county that Alpine

and downtown SLC residents, have a more liberal penchant. Look at the avenues and Sugarhouse area for example.... Rocky is not the only progressive mayor that's been voted into office.

9. Utah is a theocracy and makes no effort to hide the fact that a dominant

religion runs everything including politics there. You only need to spend some time in that state to notice how different the society is there compared to other states and how weird things are underneath what looks like normal Americans going about their business. They are in blatant violation all the time of our federal Constitution. I really believe the Atty. General should start an investigation of how much in violation of the Constitution the state of Utah is and how much of the politics and how many of the politicians are controlled by the Church of Latter Day Saints.
