Deramous was one of about 25 Oxford High students who were disciplined for violating the dress code at her school’s prom Saturday. The students in violation were allowed to stay at the prom, but the following week, each was given the option of receiving corporal punishment or accepting a three-day suspension from school, Oxford principal Trey Holladay said.

According to the Oxford prom dress code, females must wear evening gowns or cocktail dresses. The dresses cannot be made of transparent material, there cannot be slits more than four inches above the knee and there must be no revealing neck lines or back lines. The dresses can be sleeveless or strapless, provided all body parts from the shoulder to the knee are covered. Girls also can’t wear two-piece dresses with the midriff showing or with removable material covering the cleavage area.

Males must wear tuxedos or suits. They cannot wear tennis shoes or oversized clothing.

But principal Trey Holloday said it violated school policy stating that dresses cannot have cleavage falling below the breastbone or hems more than 6 inches above the knee.

"And so that expectation in our community is that it's there for protection of kids and not for management of kids," he said.

1. IF it was their policy that girls were not to wear the dresses, then they should have

required the to leave when they showed up dressed inappropriately.

The adults that let them stay are to blame because they violated their own rules only to "get" the kids the following week.

They should have said, "I'm sorry but you are not allowed into the prom with those dresses. They violate the rules we informed you of weeks ago. You will need to leave."

But they didn't. They let them in and by doing so they said, "Well, you shouldn't have worn those dresses but you're here not and so you can come in but next week you're gonna get it." (not exact quotes)

Aside from whether the rules were stupid or not stupid, they didn't enforce them.

I think the dress code is semi-okay, and schools have the right to adopt one: six inches above the knee is pretty short, and strapless is an option. HOWEVER, these things should be changed about it: larger-breasted girls are going to show some cleavage in anything but a turtleneck. This code is discriminatory against them. The girl's dress did not look abnormally low. A girl with a smaller bust would have been fine in it. Also, telling boys they cannot wear tennis shoes with their tuxedos is just plain stupid. Nix that.

All this said--the punishment should be ILLEGAL. Corporal punishment is a no-starter in my book. No WAY.

4. I'm sorry, but in my opinion, "corporal punishment" of a child older than 12 ought to be prosecuted

as a sexual assault. It's sickening. Even my PARENTS did not "spank" us after a certain age. There are lines of propriety being crossed here that go FAR beyond the average "spanking debate". This isn't about whether or not spanking is appropriate for children--even people who think that spanking children is okay should be able to see that an adult spanking a teenager is SICK, and is even SICKER when the spanking is being performed by someone who's not a parent. It boggles my mind that people who are ordinarily SO fucking prudish about "sexual morality" would EVER think that this was okay. :puke:

And no, giving the child the "option" of serving a suspension instead does not make it okay. The fact remains that these people WOULD spank a teenager. They are not opposed to the idea in theory. That alone is enough proof for ME that they're sickos.

They use a paddle, I've been paddled with wood, taped wood and Plexiglas. Nothing sexual about it. In my school men were not allowed to paddle female students. I've been paddled by both men and women, nothing sexual or wrong about it. 90% of the time I was acting up (talking too much and disrupting class) and had been warned and reprimanded multiple times, so then I was paddled.

11. Have you ever managed large groups of the young? I'd like to be able to say that on an average

they can be exposed to, or expose, whatever flesh is available and not either drift or jump right into dysfunction, but I can't. The fact is that they are very mixed up from receiving contradictory messages about sex and authority from their families and their culture ever since they were small. Though some really can manage themselves functionally, no matter what, others can't and those who are responsible for ALL of them shouldn't pretend otherwise because it results in either overt or covert harm.

In theory, the best environment in which to work out that confusion would be a free environment, but, under current conditions, the risks are too great, so schools have to make up for the poor job that parents (and churches) are doing.

It's too bad that this particular school managed it so poorly and paddling, aside from being disgustingly disrespectful, will only have an effect the opposite of what they think it will.

A word to the school: What goes around comes around.
