Tokay student plays drunk driver, arrested for carrying real drugs
LODI, CA - An 18-year-old Tokay High School student faces drug charges following his arrest Thursday during some unusual circumstances in Lodi.
Authorities say Burney "Patrick" McCarthy was playing the role of a drunk driver in the anti-teen drinking program Every 15 Minutes.
"I was chagrined to find out one of our students was really arrested," said Tokay High School Principal Erik Sandstrom. "Every 15 Minutes is a two-day program. It's a simulated teenage drunk driving accident with fatalities."
Students play the victims of the "crash." "They go to the hospital. The firefighters use the jaws of life so every student knows that we're doing everything as real-to-life as we can," Sandstrom said.
Wearing make-up simulating a black eye and blood, McCarthy was taken to jail where officials say they booked him. During that process, Sandstrom said they found the drugs.
"He was found to be in possession of narcotics," Sandstrom said.
