WellPoint Inc. revealed Friday that it boosted its chief executive's compensation 51% last year, even as the health insurance giant prepared massive rate increases in California that embroiled it in a national controversy over skyrocketing health insurance costs. The proposed rate increases of up to 39% in individual policies turned the insurer into a flash point in the healthcare overhaul battle, breathing new life into President Obama's effort at a crucial time in the debate.

Chief Executive Angela F. Braly saw her total compensation shoot to $13.1 million, from $8.7 million a year earlier, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. At least three other WellPoint executives got compensation increases of as much as 75%.The hefty packages come as WellPoint's California subsidiary, Anthem Blue Cross in Woodland Hills, seeks double-digit rate increases for many of its 800,000 members who buy individual policies.

California policyholders sharply criticized the WellPoint pay, complaining that they are subsidizing generous packages for millionaire executives. "It's unconscionable," said Mark Weiss, a Century City podiatrist whose Anthem policy will jump 35%. "How much more does somebody need?

2. i'm retired, but hubby still works.

don't know if he'll get one this year. it's usually around june. in 2008 and 2009 he got 1% because he's a top performer. most people in the company got nothing.

but it was the 5% they cut everyone the previous March. Does that count as an increase?

Then they announced a record quarter and days later announced no raises this year because of concerns about the next few quarters.

5. I got a 15% pay reduction last May, then lost my job in July

I'm a contractor and my contractor ended in July, and the company wasn't extending any contracts at the time. However, prior to that, that 15% reduction in contractor rates (for all contractors) hurt quite a bit.

8. Well tyechnically the last but a bit misleading

Since I lacked a job a year ago and have one now it's a 100% increase. The total pay however, while certainly comfortable, is a touch less than my previous job more than a year ago.

On the bright side I DID get a stock option grant that was discretionary and not part of my initial salary agreement, so that could also be construed as a pay raise - which would be about 18%.

But I am grateful to have my job. I make a decent salary and I don't blame my company. My industry has taken a huge hit the past 2 years. I'm one of the lucky ones.

12. The work I do under union contract gave me a 3% pay raise last year.

There were comparable annual raises built in to the prior years of the contract also.

Unfortunately, the rest of the year for me is non-union contract labor.

Wages for those gigs have gone up maybe 15% in the last twenty years, not enough to keep up with inflation.

As a result, my annual income has remained almost stagnant, while food and energy prices rise.

Small pay raise along with my company discontinuing our annual bonus and 'temporarily' stopping the 401k match they've always done. So, although I got a raise I'm actually getting less money overall.

mind because of the union vote coming. bob said this year he wouldn't accept a raise if they gave it because we are now on the family health plus, but are just under the limit for that. the lack of a payraise was't enough to get the union votes, but the insurance was.... at least by few votes. my brother sent in his card after they got rid of any semblance of decent insurance and offered united healthcare with its $5000 deductible. pat is one of those crazy nutwings though who hates government involvement in his healthcare..... he sure was bitchin about that $200 prescription he had to get for his wife's much necessary medicine.

Honestly, the time to adjust the paperwork was more costly than the raise.

Year before, one guy (related, of course) got $16.88 per hour raise while the rest of us got pennies.

My husband and I are on Federal Pensions and I get Social Security because I'm covered under a different pension plan. No COLAs for us, and probably none next year. That guy at Wellpoint sure seems to be doing well though.

29. So called merit increase came to about 50 cents/hour

Weeks later it became public that the brass at our hospital got "incentive" raises (they said not a bonus---it is NOT a bonus..bad word, bad word) totaling 2 million. The same brass who had town hall meetings with us telling us how broke the hospital the week we got our "merit" raises.

Officially, I received a 2% raise. In reality, my doctors are only available through the insurance option that went through the roof. I'm taking home less than I did several years ago. I'm starting to look for new doctors, so I can switch to a lower cost plan next year. I'll end up losing drs. that I've seen for 20+ years though.
