Kid in my class just posted a variation of this as an essay...lol
Edited on Sun Apr-11-10 07:34 PM by graywarrior
On Wednesday the Obama administration took its first major step in a plan to ban all firearms in the United States . The Obama administration intends to force gun control and a complete ban on all weapons for US citizens through the signing of international treaties with foreign nations. By signing international treaties on gun control, the Obama administration can use the US State Department to bypass the normal legislative process in Congress. Once the US Government signs these international treaties, all US citizens will be subject to those gun laws created by foreign governments. These are laws that have been developed and promoted by organizations such as the United Nations and individuals such as George Soros and Michael Bloomberg. The laws are designed and intended to lead to the complete ban and confiscation of all firearms.

The Obama administration is attempting to use tactics and methods of gun control that will inflict major damage to our 2nd Amendment before US citizens even understand what has happened. Obama can appear before the public and tell them that he does not intend to pursue any legislation (in the United States) that will lead to new gun control laws, while cloaked in secrecy, his Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton is committing the US to international treaties and foreign gun control laws. Does that mean Obama is telling the truth? What it means is that there will be no publicized gun control debates in the media or votes in Congress. We will wake up one morning and find that the United States has signed a treaty that prohibits firearm and ammunition manufacturers from selling to the public. We will wake up another morning and find that the US has signed a treaty that prohibits any transfer of firearm ownership. And then, we will wake up yet another morning and find that the US has signed a treaty that requires US citizens to deliver any firearm they own to the local government collection and destruction center or face imprisonment.

This is not a joke nor a false warning. As sure as government health care will be forced on us by the Obama administration through whatever means necessary, so will gun control.

I did some research and found this:

This country is so fucked if we have kids this stupid.

What grade level do you teach?
Did they cite their sources/references?
What type of essay was this supposed to be? (informative, persuasive, propaganda techniques, etc. )
What type of rubric did you use to correct this?

This was obvious written by a parent.....

From a teacher standpoint, this essay can easily be ripped apart..............the content is irrelevant when looking at structure of the essay.

5 paragraph essay.......

Introductory paragraph.
2nd para.....topic sentence w/ supporting details
3rd para....topic sentence w/ supporting details
4th para....topic sentence w/ supporting details.
Concluding paragraph

8. There's still hope. Here's one my daughter turned in for her AP English class
Edited on Sun Apr-11-10 08:23 PM by woodsprite
This was her classification and division example. She earned a 94% (tense issues were cited), but her teacher
especially liked the term 'Palinators".
-------------------
The Liberal's Guide to Republicans

Throughout the years, the term Republican has drastically changed.
When Lincoln was president, the Republican party stood for good old
fashioned American values. Somewhere along the line, that changed.
The once Grand Old Party (GOP) now believes that the "rich
shall inherit the earth" and the rest can go fly a kite. This
is only one category though. Other all-American groups include the
Gun Nuts, Teabaggers, Dark Agers, Palinators, Birthers,
Right-to-lifers, Wingnuts and Republicrats.

The term gun-nut is pretty self explanatory. These are the people
that have the twelve different guns on a rack by their bed. They
don't necessarily need that many, but it makes them feel powerful. It
gives them a false sense of security, or it just may be that they
need to compensate for something. They're all for second amendment
rights, they belong to the NRA, and they will hunt you down. Their
policy is to shoot first and ask questions later.

The lovely teabagging group is fairly new to the Republican scene.
Unfortunately for them, they didn't look up the definition before
they used it. It's too late now that they've proclaimed it to the
world. However, they are trying to change it to something catchy like
the "Donkey Punchers."

Dark-ager is a term reminiscent of Christian conquests by daring
knights. In a way the Republicans of this group are like that, except
without the daring knights. The Dark age Republicans are the ones
that don't believe in any science. This includes the Scientology
group. Other sub-groups that it contains are the Creationists and the
Anti-Climate Changers. The Creationists are those people that are on
the news every once in a while that make the viewers worry about the
future of mankind. They believe that dinosaurs existed in the same
time period as Jesus. Oh, and the Earth is only 6,000 years old. On
the other hand, the Anti-Climate Changers are the people that deny
that the ice caps have started melting. They'll happily tell you that
there is no such thing as global warming, in fact it's getting
colder.

The next two categories were actually created by this past
presidential election. It's going on two years and people are still
on the issues from the election. First there are the Palinators. This
distinguished group believes in a folksy sort of America. The one
where every woman hunts polar bears from helicopters and can see
Russia from their window. Where "the gay" is like a
disease that is curable. These are the supporters of the wannabe
presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Then there are the Birthers.
Those are the weirdos that claim that President Obama is born in
Kenya. The ones that stand up in town hall meetings and demand to
know what their local congressman will do about that Kenyan in the
White House.

Amidst all these other groups, there is one that stands out with it's
ferocity. These people truly take supporting their beliefs to the
highest level. They are the Right-to-lifers. Apparently little
conglomerations of cells deserve rights, so women should not get
abortions. Calling people names such as "baby killer" is
not unheard of from such a "respectable" group as this.

The Wingnuts are the fundamentalist christian groups that follow the
republican party media blindly. If Rush Limbaugh said that they'd be
saving thousands of children by eating rotten salmon for a year, they
would do it. Their only defense for what they do is what they hear on
TV. If it's on FOX news, then they'll probably use it to try and
justify the way they act. These are the brainwashed zombies that the
media relies on to keep them up and running. Especially when they
have shows like the O'Reilly Factor.

Republicrats are the so-called Democrats that should change their
party association. They are the reason why the government doesn't get
anything done. People like Joe Lieberman and the Democrats of the DLC
fall into this category. This means that their viewpoints are either
too conservative to belong in the Democrats or they side too often
with the Republicans.

Overall, Republicans can still be described as the conservative,
gun-toting, religious-crazed people they were in the twentieth
century. Many of the terms used today to describe them are relatively
new. However, they require the same amount of attention that they
have always needed. Yes, there certainly can be good, old-fashioned, sane
Republicans, but they are definitely outnumbered. However, with so much at
stake, it's wise not to "misunderestimate" any of them.

15. The second paragraph demonstrates
bigotry toward a large group of gun owning Americans. One that I happen to be a part of. I also happen to vote democrat most the time. I don't belong to the NRA and neither does my grandfather who owns more firearms than me and usually votes republican. We don't belong to either of those parties, and on occasion have voted against a pro-gun canidate because their voting record on other issues are not to our liking.

We do not all have a large gun collection because we are looking for a reason to use them. Most of the 150 or so in our combined collections are old historic pieces. They are not sitting in a rack by our beds, they are locked up in well made cabinets and gun safes.

The paragraph implies that all gun owners feel the need to compensate for something, usually this implies we are not happy with the size of our penis. What would she say to thousands of women who vote democrat and have a concealed weapon permit and carry daily for self defense? Would your daughter tell them that their being prepared to defend against a rapist as compensating for an irrational fear?

You have to be very careful when putting people into classifications.

16. Most gun-owners don't have more than a few.
She was talking about gun nuts, folks who have more guns than they could reasonably need, or use.

What would you call a person with 150 cats?
How about 150 toasters?
A group of 150 cars?

21. I collect them
Someone who owns 150 of each of those items might also like to collect those. Though anyone that is known to have that many cats in their posession probably isn't taking care of them properly thus breaking laws against maltreatment of animals.

Guns don't have to be fired in order to be useful. You can make a very good investment in them too. Some of the ones I own have more than doubled in value since I acquired them,(I say that because I didn't purchase all of them some of them were gifts). I don't even have ammunition for 25 percent of my collection. Which at last count before I deployed was at 86.

25. Stamp and Commemorative Plate collections tend to be less lethal, of course.
Am I correct in my recollections that there are laws specific to collections of firearms? It certainly wouldn't make much sense for a civil war museum, for example, to not be allowed "too many muskets", but likewise, a well-stocked private armory might raise a few eyebrows, requiring an FFL.... ah, found it. Type 3.

Edited on Mon Apr-12-10 06:46 AM by woodsprite
Probably not. This essay was *SUPPOSED* to categorize and was supposed to be somewhat satirical. A while back, she did some other type of essay on Religion and used George Carlin's ideas as a basis for construction. All required for her AP English class.

And actually the gun rack idea above the bed came from her uncle and his wife. They have matching ones. And yes, they are but a few in his collection.

Her latest assignment is doing a 10-page essay on the IRA conflict in Northern Ireland. She had to pick some foreign issue where the US has not been involved much.

Some parents have been setting up teachers with right-wing responses to student assignments. Their goal it to catch English teachers grading ideas instead of grammar.

14. depending on the school district.....
.....we grade on ideas, voice, conventions, and organization. They would still be marked down on voice, conventions, and organization. Plus, add in writing on the assigned topic. Following directions is a big part of writing essays. I always steer away from topics that could be controversial.

There are ways to avoid parents screaming about content of their child's essay's. Besides, I always make them show rough drafts. They are graded on each step of the writing process. Many topics are off limits......guns, knives, weapons, gangs, etc.

I could still nail that kid for a low grade......LOL

13. This falls under the "theoretically possible but unlikely" banner
It is true that a signed treaty becomes US law... I'm not sure if it qualifies as a Constitutional change, though.

A treaty requires a Presidential signature and 2/3s of the Senate for ratification, whereas a Constitutional amendment requires 2/3 each of the Senate and House, plus 3/4ths of the States. So if a treaty changes the Constitution as needed to conform to the terms of the treaty, then indeed a treaty can be used as a shortcut to fundamental change. We could pass a treaty, for example, that puts a ceiling on corporate revenues. Or a treaty agreeing to instant runoff voting for federal elections.

I just don't know if a treaty can change the Constitution. I think Thom Hartmann says it can, but that's not rock-solid proof.
