The Five Creepiest Moments of the Southern Republican Leadership Conference

If anything can make you forget 3,500 Republicans chomping reindeer jerky, it's Sarah Palin screaming "Who dat!"
April 12, 2010 |

<snip>

In a perfect world, politicians would have their own entrance songs on debate nights. But blasting your pump-up music before a set piece of shadow boxing? For that, only one song really works, and that's the one song associated with the most famous training-scene montage in film history. Yet even that might be hard to pull off if your name is Newt Gingrich. On the opening night of the conference, following a 30-minute speed bag display by Liz Cheney, the portly Gingrich attempted to play the role of Rocky Balboa for an excruciating two minutes.

To raucous applause, the former House speaker and presidential hopeful appeared through a ground level entrance just as stage speakers spat out Survivor's famous power-chords. This brought the crowd of 3,500 southern Republicans immediately to its feet, each one trying to catch of view of Gingrich as he worked his way, eyes ahead and without irony, through the crowd.

Gingrich might want to review his Rocky films. "Eye of the Tiger" appeared in Rocky III, in which Balboa is not the underdog challenger, but the 10-time defending world champion. Using the Rocky III template, Rocky is Obama, who is in possession of the championship belt known as the White House. Gingrich is not only without a belt, he is fat and retired, busy making direct-to-DVD Bircher-circuit documentaries about Christ and Country. ,,,http://www.alternet.org/news/146403/the_five_creepiest_moments_of_the_southern_republican_leadership_conference

1. Paul Wellstone entered the 2002 DFL convention to "Praise You" by Fatboy Slim and they had to replay
it a couple times because he kept stopping and talking to people and hugging them. Also, his back was giving him a ton of trouble then, and he was moving pretty slowly. In any case, whenever I hear that song, it reminds me of him. It was awesome.

2. LOL! And at the recent Palin/Bachmann rally, Pawlenty was played
onstage to John Fogerty's "Fortunate Son." Really. I flashed back to when GOP pols initially cheered Springstein's "Born in the USA" as a patriotic song--until they were clued in to its actual lyrics and meaning.

The notion of a GOP pol using Fogerty is a hoot--and he could sure give them an earful about that. I remember seeing him when he, Springstein, R.E.M. and Bright Eyes were campaigning for Kerry. Let's just say, a conservative he's NOT. :rofl:

4. I remember back in the 1980s when Reagan was complimenting Springsteen for "Born in the U.S.A." and

called it a great American patriotic song.

Evidently, he didn't read the lyrics.

It's not a 'patriotic' song, not the way the GOP thinks of it.

3. I've always wanted Salt-n-Pepa's, "Whatta Man" to play when I've entered a room
It can take up to a minute for people who don't know me to realize how awesome I am, and that's just a time waster. :)
