Mothers Who Spank More Likely to Have Aggressive Tots, Study Finds

Corporal Punishment Continues to Be Pervasive in U.S. -- With Detrimental Results

Spanking toddlers makes for more aggressive kindergartners, according to a new study from Tulane University in New Orleans.
Research finds spanking has long-term negative effects on children's behavior.

While organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Center for Effective Discipline staunchly advocate against corporal punishment, many parents continue to turn to the rod when disciplining their children.

In a 2005 online poll, 72 percent of adults reported that it was "OK to spank a child." Various studies in recent years found the prevalence of corporal punishment varied widely, from 35 percent of parents to 90 percent, authors of the Tulane study note.

In the new study, published Monday in the journal Pediatrics, researchers found that of 2,500 mothers surveyed across the country, 46 percent reported no spanking in the last month, 28 percent said they spanked one to two times, and 26 percent reported spanking more than twice.

Three-year-old children of mothers who used spanking more frequently were significantly more
likely to have aggressive kids later on down the road, the Tulane researchers found.

2. Sad, but not surprising.
When you teach children that hitting is ok (by hitting them), and that physical correction is the best form of discipline, of course they are going to learn that. :(

6. It takes an evolved mind to break the cycle of violence
sadly, it seems so many of the ape-like child-hitters are of the mindset "My parents did this to me, so I'm gonna do it to my kids" as a way of making them look better, because, in their tiny minds, if they were spanked and they decide NOT to spank their children, then that means that they were raised poorly and therefore it's, I don't know, shameful or something.

It's like hitting their kids is the validation they need to keep up the fiction that they were raised properly.

The evolved mind, of course, is able to say "What happened to me was wrong, but it's wrongness does not invalidate my entire identity; therefore, I will not do it to others."

10. yes, that must be why bush & cheney killed a million in iraq, because their nannies spanked them.
there is no violence comparable to the violence from the "enlightened" top of the pyramid.

Not sure why you would draw such an accusatory conclusion from the data given.

16. Because it teaches them to hit to impose their will on weaker persons.
Same for screaming at kids. If you're screaming, you've already lost.

If you love them, treat them with respect, demand that they treat you with respect, and use all the tools available to parents which don't include hitting and screaming. Parents who hit and scream produce kids who hit and scream.

18. Same thing with pets
I have watched in horror as some seemingly normal and intelligent people got an adorable and smart puppy and the people used the exact same unsuccessful training methods that they seen their parents use on their dogs when they were kids.

Mostly hitting and screaming.

I don't understand it either.

24. Yes. Don't get me started on mistreatment of pets.
The sad truth is that MOST people who own a pet don't have enough sense to own a pet. They think hitting a pet teaches them. It doesn't. It teaches them not to trust you. Animal training requires a bond of trust. And they don't trust people who hit them.

22. I don't understand how this isn't obvious.
But it's nice to finally have some hard data for physicians to use when telling parents why hitting your kids is a bad idea. (But again... really? This needs explaining? *sigh*)

33. it doesn't sound obvious
Most of the article is speculation to cause. Meaning it's very uncertain why it becomes less effective and why the kids become more aggressive than non-spanked kids.

28. I spank my kid almost every day
Well, it is not really spanking. It is just roughhousing. She likes it. I could not hit her any harder if I wanted to punish her. So, punishments are time outs only.
