Pulitzer Prize winners include nonprofit newsroom (ProPublica)

ProPublica, a nonprofit newsroom, won a share of the Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting on Monday, marking a shift in how journalism in the United States is presented.

The award was one of two for the new online media and represented a maturation of the electronic offspring of a tradition that goes back to when type was set by hand. Mark Fiore, whose work appeared on the website SFGate.com, won a prestigious Pulitzer for his editorial cartooning.

The Washington Post led all newspapers, winning four Pulitzers inthe international reporting, feature writing, commentary and criticism categories. The New York Times won two for explanatory reporting and national reporting and a share of a third.

The New York Times Magazine shared in the investigative reporting category for its collaboration with ProPublica on a story about the critical decisions made by doctors at a New Orleans hospital during Hurricane Katrina....
