And yes , this deserves a thread of its own,a hundred threads , a million threads , so bugger off .... a poor homeless man died and 7 people felt their own petty schedules were not worth the inconvenience.

The first time I visited NYC I interfered to shut up some guy who was harassing a woman on the subway , and boy did he mouth off some threats , "if only there were no cameras" he kept saying . Could I have been hurt , yes ? did that stop me ? no . Not because I am good or brave or moral or any of that nonsense. Just because I am a human being , and part of being a human being is having empathy.

I don't know , maybe there are some homo-sapiens that simply lack the empathy gene, that would be tragic, will make the world a much darker place than it already is.

2. What you see here isn't a mere DU occurence...it's a human phenomenon.

Take the movie "Independence Day". There is a scene where LA is blowing up and Will Smith's wife, child, and Dog are in a car in a tunnel. The explosion comes toward them and people are dying left and right...but the Dog...oh the Dog makes it with the wife and kid in the nick of time.

Maybe it's because there are so many of us. Maybe it's because we secretly hate each other deep down. Maybe we expect our fellow (wo)man to use their head and smarts animals may not possess. It's a job for the shrinks to say the least.

Now I love animals and hate to see them suffering...but our inhumane dehumanization of humans is a fascinating occurrence, no?

Interesting little story,

My brother, Max lives in an apartment in West Hollywood, that's over some stores, including a pawn shop. One night in 2008, at around 3:30AM a homeless man in a wheelchair got stuck when he fell out of his chair on the sidewalk in front of the pawnshop.

SOMEONE called 911 and when the EMTs arrived and helped the man, one of them noticed the sparkling of an electrical fire deep inside the pawn shop. They called the fire department and that saved my brother's life.

The FD had to smash deep into the walls and one empty apartment above had started to burn as well.
When the fire was out, the Fire Captain told Max and the other 2 tenants how the fire call was made.

He said he didn't believe in coincidence and that they should thank their lucky stars that someone cared enough to call 911 for a poor, and probably drunken homeless man.

Moral = Calling to help one may save many. so just call.

Of course you should call 911 when people are suffering. You're all preaching to the choir here. The more interesting and frightening question is why people don't. It's easy to judge. More important to understand why, in my opinion.

The reason I had the tone of an asshole in the thread is because I was pissed and angry , and still am .

14. I live and have lived in various (liberal )Manhattan neighborhoods

and can tell you that many times there have been incidences that I have been a part of where someone was hurt, bleeding, convulsing,etc. on the ground and numerous people stopped, called 911, waited until medical help showed up, asked the person if there was anything they could do - if the person was conscious and obvious not in grave danger - and yes, many of these victims have been members of the homeless community.

I don't know what happened in Queens, but I can assure you that there are many caring people in NYC who will go out of there way to help a stranger, no matter what their station in life is as long as they aren't waving a gun or a knife around. It's sad that this happened, but unless you are a local, you don't here about the good people or the daily acts of kindness and heroism either.

15. I happened upon someone passed out on the sidewalk

he was out cold but his eyes were open,I thought he was dead. I could smell the booze and he had a medical bracelet on so I knew he was in trouble. This was way before I got a cellphone but someone else had one and called 9-11,I waited until the paramedics got there and left.

I don't know whatever became of him, but there is no way I am just going to walk by someone in trouble like that. How can anyone live with himself?
