Venezuelan university professors started a 72-hour strike and additional protests such as a march to the Vice President's office to demand better wages.

University teachers are unhappy with a 40-percent increase announced by the government, said the Secretary for Academic Affairs of the Association of University Professors, Central University of Venezuela (Apucv).

Venezuelan teachers claimed that the increase is ridiculous and that the Venezuelan authorities did not take into account negotiations between professors and the Ministry of Higher Education in the past few months.

2. After two years without a raise and a 55-60% accumulated inflation

It means the real salary had decreased by 55-60% before this raise.

After the raise, it will be 15-20% lower than it was 2 years ago.

But you already know that...

The state teachers are asking for an indexation of their salary to the inflation. Think for a second and try to forget Chavez and the MSM. This is one of the most basic, typical and legitimate social demands that you'll find in any society. They just want their salary to stay constant in the long term.

They had already negotiated with the Minister and he had told them that the government would compensate the inflation 1 to 1, meaning their real salary from 2 years ago would be reestablished. They got 1/3 less and no real time indexation.

But you're against them. And you pretend to be a leftist. I call that hypocrisy.

I mean we're laying off tens of thousands of them and only because of a 3% inflation blip. What the fuck. Our entire educational system would collapse.

3. I can't get a job teaching in CA and unless I take Chavez up on his offer

to hire out of work CA teachers, won't be teaching any time soon. Plus, the wages I've earned my entire working life have never kept up with cost of living increases.

This strike is part of a negotiation and I support these teachers doing what they can to be fairly compensated for their work.
