Uruguayan President Jose Mujica and Peruvian president-elect Ollanta Humala agreed here Monday to strengthen bilateral relations and to promote regional integration in South America.
Mujica said after the meeting the two countries had to collaborate for the integration of South America.
Humala said it was important for Peru to participate in the political mechanisms of the Common Market of the South (Mercosur) as the third associate member of the bloc.
In a globalized world, it was important to look to South America as "a space of opportunities, markets and investments", Humala said, adding Peru and the Mercosur shared a "common goal" to solve problems such as education, security and health.
