The top announced Republican candidate against Sen. Russ Feingold (D) is vowing to stay in the race even if former Gov. Tommy Thompson (R) throws his hat into the ring.
"I would stay in the race," Terrence Wall, a wealthy real estate developer, said Wednesday on conservative Wisconsin radio host Jay Weber's program.
"Three months ago, if you had asked me then, I might have had a different answer," Wall added. "But as I've gotten out all over the state in the last three months, people are excited about having a true conservative ... The country's going broke. We don't have enough money to keep spending the way we're spending. It takes a different skill set."
Wall said there "certainly" are Republican donors loyal to Thompson who are waiting for him to make up his mind before they donate. But Wall said Thompson's mulling of a Senate candidacy has actually helped him - because he's been able to concentrate on building his campaign organization and avoid attacks from Democrats, who have unleashed a barrage of criticism at Thompson as if he were an announced candidate.
