Speculation About Clinton Among Potential High-Court Nominees

Could Secretary of State Hillary Clinton really be in the mix to don a black robe on the bench of the nation's highest court?

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says she's 'hopeful for a smooth transition.'The White House says the answer is "no," despite all the chatter in Washington today.

"The President thinks Secretary Clinton is doing an excellent job as secretary of state and wants her to remain in that position," White House spokesman Tommy Vietor said.

The comments come after Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, created a stir earlier today when he told NBC's "Today" show that he believed Clinton was among the possible candidates to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens.

"I even heard the name Hillary Clinton today," Hatch said. "That would be an interesting person in the mix."

President Obama is said to be actively reviewing the credentials of at least 10 potential candidates to fill Stevens' soon-to-be vacant seat, and some had speculated Clinton could be among them.

1. 10 years ago she would have been a great choice

now I fear she is too old. With the republicans appointing very young men, there is little room for an older appointment.

2. Orrin Hatch just wants a fight among the attack dogs on both sides, and HRC is red meat...

Just a little something we should all keep in mind. There is no other reason for a Repub like Orrin to even mention Hillary Clinton's name.

I actually have a great deal of confidence in President Obama's ability to pick someone for the Court -- a person who can get things accomplished, and one of the oft-overlooked ways getting things accomplished happens is by a person who has good interpersonal skills. It will be interesting to see who he comes up with.

don't take the bait. If she wanted it, im sure sure would be an option.

The woman is sharper than a glass knife. I have absolutely no doubt she'd adopt the spirit and letter of The Constitution as naturally as leaves adopt the wind.

But right now, she's kicking ass for us globally. I'm way for that right now.

Which would make for a weak nomination. While she may have the character for the role, she is not an option.

But she is too valuable in her current role to spare her. I agree wholeheartedly with the President here: leave Mrs Clinton at State.

9. Not only no, but HELL NO!

Hillary Clinton is doing a FAN-FREAKIN'-TASTIC job as SecState, and we need her to continue in this vital role. Who else would have been able to pull off getting 46 other heads of State together in one place besides the former First Lady? She looks like she's enjoying herself immensely. So no, I don't want her to be nominated to SCOTUS. I think that she would be an excellent justice, but she's doing such a good job that I don't want her to leave State!

10. She's too good at her current job--we can't afford to lose her, especially not in the middle

of the START treaty fight with the Senate.
