Romanoff piles up more delegates

Former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff increased his convention delegate lead over Sen. Michael Bennet Saturday, sweeping up victories in some of Colorado's largest county assemblies.

Romanoff, who is mounting an aggressive challenge to Bennet in the Democratic primary for Senate, now leads the appointed senator 57 percent to 42 percent among delegates, according to a Romanoff campaign count.

Bolstered by his strength in Denver and El Paso counties, the result builds on the lead Romanoff established coming out of the precinct caucuses in March.

"Many delegates selected at the caucuses were uncommitted and most of them have come off the fence at the county assemblies. Romanoff gained the lion's share of them," Romanoff spokesman Dean Toda told POLITICO.

1. Bennet is finished

Many Colorado naysayers think Romanoff can't cut it. Still, with no TV ads, he still is getting a lot of delegates.

Bennet has accomplished nothing significant in his brief so-called career. The only accomplishment he made was penning the letter supporting public option, but that's about the gist of it.

GOP primary is a 3 way dance, and none of them are viable enough to defeat Romanoff.

We'll have a true progressive for a Senator. He'll be a bit right to Bernie, but I'll take him as he was my state rep for many years.

11. That's in August.

Colorado has a weird system in that they have both party caucuses and primaries. The caucuses merely determine who gets on the ballot for the August primary - you have to get 30% of the delegates sent from the caucuses to the assemblies in order to get on the ballot, and the person with the most caucus votes gets top billing on the ballot. Then the primary election determines who goes on to the general election.
