Henry McMaster tops GOP rivals in money race for governor
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Attorney General Henry McMaster’s campaign for governor today announced that it raised $464,799 from over 800 contributors during the first quarter of 2010, the largest amount disclosed by any Republican candidate for governor when the reporting deadline passed at midnight Saturday. McMaster also reported $1.4 million cash-on-hand to spend in the last 57 days of the primary election.

McMaster has virtually erased Congressman Gresham Barrett’s earlier lead in cash-on-hand.

Financial disclosures show that Congressman Barrett ($427,000 raised/ $1.5 million in the bank) has spent almost $1 million – close to 40% – of the $2.4 million he has raised to date. By contrast, McMaster has run a more frugal campaign. To date, McMaster has raised $1.9 million but has spent only 24% of his budget, leaving $1.4 million in cash-on-hand.

“Henry is running a smart, conservative and fiscally disciplined campaign,” said Bill Stern, McMaster’s campaign finance chairman. “Business leaders and donors who were previously on the fence will see this as a good indication of the type of successful governor Henry will be. Our campaign is gaining both financial and political momentum at just the right time.”
