– Thu Jan 13, 2:50 pm ET

MOSCOW (Reuters) – A wounded fox shot its would be killer in Belarus by pulling the trigger on the hunter's gun as the pair scuffled after the man tried to finish the animal off with the butt of the rifle, media said Thursday.

The unnamed hunter, who had approached the fox after wounding it from a distance, was in hospital with a leg wound, while the fox made its escape, media said, citing prosecutors from the Grodno region.

"The animal fiercely resisted and in the struggle accidentally pulled the trigger with its paw," one prosecutor was quoted as saying.

Fox-hunting is popular in the picturesque farming region of northwestern Belarus which borders Poland.

5. I have to admit being more concerned about the fate of the fox..
Than this asshole hunter and his leg wound... Hard to argue it wasn't at least partially self-inflicted.

I have to give props to the Fox though... just hope it's not suffering one way or the other.

the man was hunting the fox for food? I suspect even you know that that is not why fox are hunted. If he were hunting for food, I could understand his actions.

You seem determined to castigate me, while you defend animal cruelty. You are correct that we don't know to what degree the hunter is or is not an asshole, but this discussion is revealing in other respects.

29. My very simple point is that we *don't* know the circumstances.
I'm not 'castigating' anyone.

Perhaps he was indeed hunting the fox for the sake of food. Perhaps in a way that you have not considered yet.

I only ever hope that people I talk to at least think.

34. My 'condescension' is reserved for people that can't be bothered to consider
that which may be outside of their worldview.

In this case, I made no pronouncements, condescending or otherwise about your character. Instead I left the door open for you to choose whether you would engage in thoughtful consideration of my point, or turn and attack me instead.

No one is at the receiving end of my 'condescension' who did not somehow earn it.

Now, if you would like to consider my point and comment on its validity one way or another, I invite you to do so. If, on the other hand, you would rather make this about me, then it might be best not to comment further.

adopted by those who NEED to feel themselves superior-- as a means to compensate for feelings of inferiority. It is rude and aggressive behavior that is not conducive to any kind of civil or constructive discussion. I don't know why you feel the need, but, I do agree that with this attitude, it really is best that you not comment further.

Seems far more humane that if one is determined to "hunt" a bullet is faster.

Maybe, just maybe, this man had more difficult realities to deal with than you are willing to consider.

Unlikely. My American attitude that you allude to, doesn't visit vanity like the person you apologize for does, methinks.

Stay with that, paints you well.

35. That's exactly my point ; "We don't know".
Now this person is 'vain'? Really?

I'm always amazed at how much some people seem to know.

What 'paints' me is the fact that I do not rush to judgment when I am not in possession of sufficient facts.

So... why was he hunting the fox?

37. It only takes a bit of google... Fox hunting is a sport in Belarus
after seeing that on a number of sites I decided to see how many people eat "Fox Meat"... I found one.. He had a recipe.. here it is:

Take the fox meat

slice it into 1 inch strips
marinate in beer/ teriaki sauce, add garlic
add vegetables and cubed potatoes
take fox meat, vegetables and potatoes, place on a wooden cutting board
place in pre heated oven at 400 degrees
cook for 1 hour
remove from oven
throw away fox meat, potatoes and vegetables
eat wooden board

I'd say it's safe to assume, this guy was hunting for sport.

And he must be a lousy sportsman if he was hunting a small unarmed animal with no opposable thumbs and a brain the size of a lemon, and managed to get shot by said animal with his own gun.

I'm thinking it might be in the best interest of the people around him if they kept deadly weapons away from this genius.

40. Now the assumptions have support.
While we still can't be sure he wasn't protecting his chickens, at least that is a piece of information that helps support the 'he's an asshole' conclusion so many decided immediately... and likely without doing any more research than a visceral query.

It is fairly plain that there are many people on DU that believe the only reason people hunt is to get a thrill-kill. I happen to know for a fact that this is not the case, and that there are many people whose modest subsistence is only sustained by hunting. Such comments as "Needless suffering for a 50 cent savings.", at the suggestion that this person may need to be careful with his resources, reveals a particular ignorance of how other people on Earth might be compelled to live.

That fox hunting in the region is 'popular' is also not enough to draw the 'asshole' conclusion. 'Popular' does not necessarily mean 'done for fun', as a people may favor a 'popular' approach to problems as well as entertainment.

So, if this is 'sport hunting', and it is not done to protect livestock or provide food, then the assumption that this person is an asshole is not without justification. It is also without anything that approaches certainty.

Is this person an 'asshole' who was just out to get a kill and collect a trophy?

Until we read the interview with him, or get some other substantiation, none of us will know.

Is he incompetent?

Yes, absolutely... he let a fox shoot him. We are in complete agreement that whatever his motives, his methods are lousy. He probably should not have nail-clippers let alone firearms.

Does the fox kick ass?

Totally, and I hope he goes on to have many kits who will become the bane of Belarus hunters for generations to come.

36. Wow.
I'm always amazed at how so many can invert logic to support their own self-righteousness.

That, and I don't spend every minute of my life on DU... so saying 'crickets' as though I had no response is just silly.

First of all, I'd love to hear just what 'assumptions' I've made... because I have done exactly the opposite; I've made none.

You, like many others, have already ascribed motives you cannot know to this hunter. It is you who has made 'assumptions'.

Second, I'd like to know just what I've said is 'pathetic'.

I'll give you plenty of time and not assume that failure to respond immediately somehow means you have no answer.

41. Ok off topic a bit but I stopped reading MAD in the early 80's
I just kind of outgrew it. When my kids hit that age, I started buying it again, and now I look forward to every single issue. They nail everyone from Beck to Palin, and they do it in every issue.
Politics have become so fucked up MAD Spends more time on it then they do on lame TV. And I couldn't be happier. It's still some of the best satire out there...
