One of the wounded in Saturday's Tucson shootings also witnessed the deadly shooting at Kent State University in 1970.

Randy Gardner, 60, wanted to see U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords at her community meeting to encourage her support for health care reform.

Gardner worked for years as a mental health counselor. He told The New York Times that he ran for his life during the Kent shootings, which took the life of a woman from his English class. In 2005, according to the Times, he left Portland, Ore., and moved to Tucson. He was shot in the foot at Saturday’s event.

“These types of experiences,” he told the Times. “You change.”

1. . . .
Neil Young's "Ohio" commemorated the tragic event.

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Gotta get down to it
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her
And found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know?

Tin soldiers and Nixon coming,
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming,
Four dead in Ohio.

2. I was in New York at that time and I still
remember the day as if it were yesterday.
