Tucson "shooting victim also witnessed Kent State shootings"

Randy Gardner was settling into a chair, chatting with an elderly woman also waiting to meet U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords last Saturday, when the sound of gunshots collapsed his world into a blur of gray figures and ricocheting screams.

It was only much later, as he lay on the ground with a bullet wound in the right foot that his mind hurtled back: May 4, 1970. Kent State University.

"Here I am again," he thought, "dodging bullets."

As a sophomore at Kent State, Gardner had joined a group of students protesting the Vietnam War, when members of the Ohio National Guard suddenly opened fire. He sprinted toward a field and "hit the ground" to avoid the bullets. Later, he discovered four of his classmates were killed, including a girl from his English class.

2. The closest victim was 90 yards away from the guard.

Most of the victims were shot in the back or the side.

Yep, they posed a threat to the guardsmen.

A group of student protesters were confronted by city and state police. 9. Yes....he was lucky.

And the women he was sitting next to was killed. I simply can't imagine living through such a violent situation.

I haven't heard much of the others who are still hospitalized. And I'm still reading that 19 were injured/killed and in other reports it is 20.

But I haven't had the TV on. I get most of my news from DU...not MSM TV.

Did you know that the little girl that was murdered was the only girl on her softball team? Damn. Her poor parents.

My aunt just passed away yesterday....everything has been so sad. I hate going to funerals...they don't give me any peace whatsoever. I guess the Irish Wake might be better...it's a tad more of a celebration of life instead of all death-oriented.

Funerals are...well, it depends on the family and friends I guess. My family has a bit more experience than I'd like and it does run the spectrum.
