Occupy Berkeley protest joined by Occupy Oakland
BERKELEY, CA (AP) - A band of protesters from the Occupy Oakland movement marched five miles along Telegraph Avenue from Oakland to Berkeley.
About 300 demonstrators chanted, "Here comes Oakland" as they approached the campus Tuesday in a show of solidarity with University of California students who were protesting against banks and cuts to higher education.
Occupy Oakland is one of the largest and most active in the national movement. A raid at their encampment on Monday led to the arrest of some 50 people camped out at the downtown plaza.
Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan said a strong police presence would remain at the plaza around the clock to make sure protesters didn't pitch tents and roll out sleeping bags again.
