Marry a Muslim or die' threat to Harry Potter actress revealed as brother is jailed for beating her up

The full horror of a three-hour attack on one of the stars of the Harry Potter films was revealed in court for the first time as her brother was jailed for beating her up.

Ashraf Azad has been locked up for six months after setting upon his sister Afshan having discovered she was involved in a relationship with a non-Muslim man.

Manchester Crown Court heard he left his younger sister bruised and swollen after grabbing her by the hair, throwing her across a room and punching her in the head and back as she cowered on the floor of the family home.

Actress Afshan, 22, played Padma Patil, a classmate of the young wizard at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

41. Stuff alone. Most prisons have a lifer with a special talent for...
...delivering a scientific beating. The sort of beating which marries a maximum of pain, with a minimum of injury.

It is amazing how often these individuals somehow end up in an exercise yard with a prisoner who manages to upset both the screws and the lags. eg. child abusers.

Religion is irrational. Irrationality is the reason why our country is going down the shithole. If religion were gone, maybe it'd make people think more rationally.

63. Female circumcision is not religious in origin. It is a cultural practice.
It is practiced throughout the region, in both Muslim and non-Muslim areas. The one Muslim text that mentions female circumcision says that if it is going to be done, a more mild form that retains the capacity for sexual pleasure should be performed.

If you study anthropology, you will see that the values that spring up in religious beliefs generally reflect the society itself, rather than vice versa.

62. Have you looked at your avatar recently???
I have been an atheist for several years now...but the belief that religion is responsible for human irrationality is a pretty irrational belief in itself. Religion is like any other human institution; it can be used for great good, or great evil. In the absence of religion, people will find other reasons to hate and dehumanize one another, whether it be race, nationality, political belief, or any other difference that can be exploited by the powerful to incite the ignorant.

The bottom line is that religion a part of this world and a part of many peoples' worldview, and nothing you ever do is going to remove it. Adopting the stance that religion is fundamentally evil, and everyone who has a religious faith must be fundamentally irrational and unworthy of respect is both useless, destructive, and profoundly ignorant of human nature.

Brother jailed for attack on 'Harry Potter' star

(AFP) 56 minutes ago

LONDON The brother of a "Harry Potter" film actress was jailed for six months Friday for assaulting her because her boyfriend was not Muslim.

Afshan Azad, 21, who played Potter's classmate Padma Patil in the smash hit films, was subjected to a "prolonged and nasty" beating over her Hindu boyfriend, Manchester Crown Court in northwest England heard.

Her brother Ashraf, 28, overheard her talking on the phone to her boyfriend and subjected to her a lengthy ordeal before her family in which she feared for her life.

During the row at the family home in Manchester on May 21 last year, she was branded a "slag" and a "prostitute" and told: "Marry a Muslim or you die!"

The actress called for leniency and begged the judge not to jail her brother.

However, Roger Thomas sent Ashraf Azad to prison for six months after he pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Afshan Azad, 21, who played Padma Patil, a classmate of the teenage wizard, in the blockbuster Hollywood films based on JK Rowling's children's books, feared for her life during the three-hour ordeal, Manchester Crown Court heard.

She was punched, dragged around by her hair and strangled by her brother Ashraf Azad, 28, who threatened to kill her after he caught her talking on the phone to her Hindu boyfriend on May 21 last year, the court was told.

During the row at the family home in Longsight, Manchester, which also involved her mother and father, she was branded a ''slag'' and a ''prostitute'' and told: ''Marry a Muslim or you die!''

Sure it's unreliable, a hatemonger, and is regularly shown up as a liar.

So is every other mass media outfit I've encountered in my whole life. Are we to not quote any of them on DU ever?

God knows the New York Times hasn't done much better. Fact-check their reporting of Al Gore, for example.

The Daily Mail is incredibly racist. Have you ever looked at it before? Getting something wrong about Al Gore is not racist or hatemongering, btw...

Here's a link to a thread about the Daily Mail that was in the UK forum recently. Many Americans are totally unaware of what sort of source it is, which is why when it's posted at DU people need to be told. Many of them would avoid posting from it once they're aware of what it is...

culture. Most of those "muslims" really don't practice that much. The fact the brother was drinking is testimony to that. It's really a cultural thing about family honor and more likely the family wanting to make a marriage that is beneficial to them. What the girl wants is unimportant to them. I had an Egyptian friend back when I was in college, who was Christian. It was the same dynamic and they married her off to a rich Lebanese son of one of her father's business associates even though she had fallen in love with an American. She was never beaten, but her brothers closed in on her when they heard of the romance with the American and they never left her alone until the day she was married to a man she hardly knew and didn't love.
