Rep. Loretta Sanchez sparks outrage from fellow Democrats with proposal to boot Giffords from Armed Services Committee

Chris Moody - The Daily Caller
Tue Jan 25, 5:17 pm ET

Behind closed doors, California Democratic Rep. Loretta Sanchez has proposed removing Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords from the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) until she recovers from injuries sustained after being shot in the head on Jan. 8 in Tucson, The Daily Caller has learned.
The proposal sparked an outrage, according to those in the room including from those in Sanchezs own party.

Its not appropriate, Texas Democratic Rep. Silvestre Reyes told The Daily Caller, adding that there was outrage among some members in the room when Sanchez made the suggestion. Its bad for morale during her recovery period.
Reyes and Rep. Adam Smith of Washington put up most of the fight against Sanchez, and helped squash the idea.
From a woman who memorialized her cat, youd think shed show a little more compassion for a woman shot in the face, said one GOP aide, referring to Sanchezs 2010 Christmas card that paid tribute to her late cat, Gretzky.

snip

Gabby has always been one of the most active members on the Armed Services Committee, and Rep. Sanchez wants to make sure HASC Democrats preserve her voice until the congresswoman has returned, Sanchezs Press Secretary Caroline Hogan told TheDC. Rep. Sanchez simply inquired whether a proxy could represent the Congresswoman on the Committee at Rep. Giffords request. That way, Gabbys legislative priorities and seniority would be preserved until her return. Any other interpretation of her question is ludicrous.
When it comes to committee votes, Giffordss absence will have little impact since Republicans hold a majority in the House.
I think the congresswoman forgets what it is like to be in the minority, said one former Democratic aide. Minority still loses whether you have one more vote or not.

3. Looks like Sanchez was trying to do the right thing.
But took a ham fisted approach. Her intent appears to have been to protect Giffords' seniority and give Gifford's policy initiatives voice. Sanchez could have spent more time explaining her position behind the scene to members of her party.

4. Yep , they should have had a meeting and a plan to temporarily replace her
The seat should be filled though, because the balance is askew anyway, and losing even one voice is dangerous.

Frankly, I do not see her ever returning to congress. Her rehab will take months, and then the re-election season will start up, with fundraising etc. Her stamina will certainly take a long time to return, and if her speech is not "normal", or her recollection is not complete, she will probably be primaried and even though she's beloved, she would probably not win.

It's sad to think that her career is over, but it may well be.

If she has a great recovery, she may want to continue, but her body may say "no"...

7. "until she recovers from injuries sustained after being shot in the head"
What part of the quote do you have a problem with.

The work should be done by SOMEONE while she is out.

13. It remains that we will have one less voice.
We should have someone filling in for her.

15. That is a fair statement
And I can agree to disagree.

The House is so lopsided that I don't think that it really matters.

11. Why not allow another Democrat serve and vote on these committees?
With the understanding that it is only as a seat warmer?
