McCarthy endorses Cheney foe in Wyoming GOP primary
Source: CNN
The tension between the two began in the wake of the January 6 insurrection when Cheney called for her party to move on from former President Donald Trump and voted to impeach him, while McCarthy chose to cozy up to the former President. Cheney's criticism of Trump led to his backers in the House to successfully push for her to be removed from her position as the chairwoman of the GOP Conference. It was a movement McCarthy initially resisted, but ultimately backed.
"I am proud to endorse Harriet Hageman for Congress," McCarthy said in a statement.
"The most successful Representatives in Congress focus on the needs of their constituents, and throughout her career, Harriet has championed America's natural resources and helped the people of Wyoming reject burdensome and onerous government overreach," McCarthy added.

(8,203 posts)no fan of the Cheneys, but they, the Cheneys are a powerhouse in Wyoming politics...I just don't see that changing, least of all because dorkman and tfg are in for hagman. Liz Cheney has NOT backed off of her quest to hold tfg accountable for 1/6..

(8,203 posts)comes down to Liz Cheney NOT backing off holding tfg's feet to the fire..at some level she is getting support from her constituents and political heavyweights in WY....IMHO..

(62 posts)Wyoming is likely the most conservative state in the country - one Trump won with 70% of the vote in 2020. I'm from a state over and I can tell you that even the appearance of not being 100% all in on Trump is likely to end any chance of winning there.

(370 posts)Why does anybody think supporting Trump is being Conservative??
Dirty Heads
(62 posts)If you look at polling, most conservatives will support Trump. The word has changed to fit Trumpism. At least in America, they're basically interchangeable now.
Unless conservatives actually reclaim it, which they don't seem to want to do, it'll remain tied with Trump.
But it's not unique for liberal/conservatives word to change ideologically.
Liberal used to mean something entirely different than what we think of the word today. In fact, classical liberals used to be more libertarian - the idea of limited everything. Limited government, limited economic regulations and the like.
It wasn't until the 20th Century that liberal started to include larger government and more economic restrictions.
I think American Conservatives are more influenced by populism and authoritarianism than you'd ever see from conservatives 50 years ago.

(370 posts)Cheney should run as an independent ... the most important issue is the preservation of Democracy ...
This shows, yet again, how the GOP is nothing more than the party of Trump backed fascism..Its sickening how they are going out of their way to cover up their crimes!

(1,246 posts)Is the whole state really that far off the rails that they would prefer to put in a Trumper versus a proven, staunch conservative, or is it just the nutjob leadership and Trump butt-kissers in the state wanting that to happen.
I do not like her, but that does not have anything to do with Trump.
